Project Overview

Returnal is a AAA roguelike third-person shooter developed by Housemarque and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. Set on the ever-shifting alien planet Atropos, players experience a time loop as astronaut Selene, facing procedurally arranged biomes filled with bullet-hell combat encounters. The game blends fast-paced action with atmospheric exploration and narrative discovery.

Role & Responsibilities
  • Managed overall design quality in a design leadership role
  • Led design quality on enemy and boss design, co-op features, economy, and weapon balancing
  • Owned all UI/UX design quality and delivery for the PC port
Key Contributions

Design Leadership — Oversaw design quality across the project, serving as design leadership and coordinating with all stakeholders to ensure a cohesive, high-quality experience.

Enemy, Boss & Systems Design — Led design quality on enemy and boss design, co-op features, economy systems, and weapon balancing, shaping core gameplay pillars.

PC UI/UX Ownership — Owned all UI/UX design quality and delivery for the PC version, ensuring the interface and user experience translated effectively to the platform.

  • Won Best Action Game at The Game Awards 2021
  • Metacritic score of 86 at launch
  • PC port successfully delivered with dedicated UI/UX tailored to the platform
